Pillow Block Bearings

Overview

pillow-block-bearings

Talos Bearing offers a comprehensive range of mounted bearing products:

  • Standard cast-iron UCP/UCPA mounted bearings for general industrial drive equipment;
  • Eccentric locking and adapter sleeve mounted bearings designed for high-vibration environments or bidirectional rotation applications;
  • Stamped steel mounted bearings that meet cost requirements for light-duty OEM applications;
  • Stainless steel and thermoplastic mounted bearings suitable for washdown and corrosive environments;
  • Heavy-duty split SN/SNL housings for large-scale shaft systems in the mining, steel, and paper industries.

All mounted bearings are pre-lubricated at the factory and ready for immediate installation; detailed technical specifications are available upon request.

Features & Benefits

  • Self-aligning spherical insert compensates for ±2°–3° of static shaft misalignment, eliminating edge-loading stress that shortens bearing life in field installations where perfectly level mounting is rare.
  • Pre-lubricated, ready-to-install design with a grease fitting for relubrication — no bearing press, no machined housing bore, no specialized tooling required at installation.
  • Locking method matched to duty cycle — set screw for unidirectional light duty, eccentric collar for vibration and reversing drives, adapter sleeve for heavy-duty and field-serviceable large-shaft applications.
  • Material range covers every environment — cast iron for general industry, pressed steel for cost-driven light duty, stainless steel and thermoplastic for washdown, food, and corrosive service.
  • Split housing option (SN/SNL) allows bearing inspection and replacement without removing the shaft, cutting maintenance downtime on large continuous-process lines.

Applications & Industries

  • Material handling & conveyor systems — UCP and UELP units support idler and drive pulley shafts on belt and screw conveyors, where the two-bolt mount simplifies alignment across long frame runs.
  • Agriculture — pressed-steel and UCPA adapter-sleeve units support augers, PTO shafts, and harvester drivelines, where field replacement without specialized tools is a practical requirement.
  • Mining & aggregate processing — heavy-duty SN/SNL split plummer blocks with spherical roller inserts support large-diameter shafts on crushers, screens, and overland conveyors under high shock load.
  • HVAC fans & blowers — cast iron UCP units support fan shafts where moderate speed and continuous duty cycle call for reliable, low-maintenance self-aligning support.
  • Water & wastewater treatment — stainless steel and thermoplastic units support screw pumps, clarifier drives, and aerator shafts in wet, often chemically aggressive environments.
  • Food & beverage processing — stainless steel and thermoplastic washdown-rated units meet hygienic requirements for conveyor and mixer drive shafts subject to regular high-pressure cleaning.

FAQs

What is the difference between a pillow block bearing and a flange bearing?

A pillow block (plummer block) mounts with the shaft running parallel to the base, typically using two bolt holes. A flange bearing mounts perpendicular to a wall or vertical panel, typically using four bolts, with the shaft passing through the panel. Both commonly use the same UC-type insert internally — only the housing shape and mounting orientation differ.

Yes. Talos Bearing supplies 304 and 316 stainless steel housings paired with stainless or coated inserts for food, beverage, and pharmaceutical washdown environments. Specify your contact-surface and cleaning-chemical requirements so we can confirm the correct grade and seal type.

Set screw locking is lower cost and suited to unidirectional rotation under light-to-moderate load. Eccentric collar locking grips more securely under vibration and bidirectional rotation. Choose based on your drive’s rotation pattern and vibration level — see Section 9 for the full decision framework.

Under normal ambient conditions, every 1,000–2,000 operating hours or every 6 months, whichever comes first. In wet, dusty, or high-temperature environments, shorten the interval to 500–1,000 hours. Use NLGI Grade 2 lithium-based grease unless your application specifies otherwise.

Yes. Standard UCP/UCPA series housings and inserts follow ISO 113, ISO 3228, and ISO 9628 boundary dimensions, making bore size, bolt spacing, and base-to-center height interchangeable with major-brand equivalents in the same size designation.
